Madison, Wis. – State Representative Janel Brandtjen, Chair of the Assembly Committee on Campaigns and Elections, responds to the loophole that puts military and active military member ballots at risk:

“Last week, two veterans and I, on behalf of our brave military men and women, filed an injunction to give clerks additional time to verify that military ballots were indeed legitimate ballots. During the hearing before Judge Michael Maxwell, it became clear that there is no way to verify the ballots, and there is no existing list that would allow clerks to verify the names of our overseas military members. The law that eliminated the registration requirement was put into place during the Vietnam War. Technology advances have made this antiquated law unnecessary and the proper security measures should be restored immediately, including ID and registration,” said Rep Brandtjen.
