MADISON – In reaction to legislative Republicans’ failure to take up Gov. Evers’ special session call to repeal Wisconsin’s archaic 1849 total abortion ban, Rep. Jonathan Brostoff (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement:

“Today, Wisconsin Republicans once again proved that they are firmly dedicated to rolling back fundamental rights and taking our state as far back into the past as possible. The decision to terminate a pregnancy is a deeply personal and nuanced one; one that should be made by the pregnant person and their doctor alone.

By refusing to act today, Wisconsin Republicans have made it abundantly clear that they have absolutely zero respect for women and other pregnant people, zero understanding of how nuanced and difficult these decisions are, and absolutely zero compassion for victims of rape and incest. Politicians with no understanding or empathy for their constituents or their needs frankly have no business making decisions that do not concern them. To be very clear, if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade as expected and Wisconsin’s ban is allowed to take effect, the most marginalized in our state will suffer the most from this total ban, and people will die from complications or unsafe abortion procedures. But despite all of their ‘pro-life’ rhetoric, Republicans continue to prove that they simply do not care about those who are actually living in our state.

I am disappointed but not surprised that Wisconsin Republicans continue to turn a blind eye to the needs of our shared constituents and to the will of the people – it has been their brand for over a decade.

No matter what happens today or in the days to come, I will continue to stand firmly in solidarity with women and pregnant Wisconsinites who demand and deserve the right to make their own decisions about their bodies and their healthcare.
