Madison – Today, Governor Evers released an executive order bringing the Wisconsin Legislature into a special session on October 4th. Governor Evers is calling on legislative leaders to take up a bill allowing voters to put referenda on ballots. This would give the people of Wisconsin a pathway to repeal the 1849 criminal abortion ban. Representative Dave Considine (D-Baraboo) released the following statement on this announcement:

“As members of the Wisconsin Legislature, we have a duty to represent the people of Wisconsin. However, my colleagues across the aisle continue to ignore the wishes of the people. By passing a law to let voters put referenda on ballots, we would be leaving it up to the voters. This would give the people of Wisconsin a pathway to repealing the abortion ban, if they so choose.

“We must be able to have an open discussion about these issues. Often times, when Governor Evers calls for a special session, we are not given the opportunity to discuss the merits of the bill we are there to discuss. It is my hope that we can give this legislation a chance to ensure that the will of the people is the law of the land.”
