MIDDLETON – Today, Governor Tony Evers signed Executive Order #168 calling for a special session on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 to pass legislation to repeal Wisconsin’s 173 year old criminal abortion ban. Representative Dianne Hesselbein (D-Middleton) released the following statement:

“I thank Governor Evers for calling this special session to repeal Wisconsin’s criminal abortion ban. In light of the recently leaked draft U.S. Supreme Court opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that would overturn Roe v. Wade, it is critical that Wisconsin’s criminal abortion ban be repealed now. Reproductive freedom is at risk and we need to do everything we can to protect it.

“Banning abortions will not stop them in Wisconsin. It will only make abortions unsafe and put people’s lives at risk simply for accessing the healthcare they need. Instead of punishing doctors and criminalizing patients, we need to make reproductive healthcare accessible and affordable to all Wisconsinites.

“Abortion is healthcare. We must keep fighting to preserve the rights enshrined in Roe v. Wade and continue to work to overturn Wisconsin’s criminal abortion ban.”
