Madison, WI – Recently, Legislative Republicans gaveled in and out of Governor Evers’ special session to
create a pathway for voters to overturn the archaic 1849 abortion law by establishing binding referenda in
Wisconsin. This is the eleventh special session, out of twelve called by the governor, that has been gaveled in
and gaveled out with no action taken by Republicans in the Legislature. Rep. Beth Meyers (D-Bayfield)
released the following statement:

“The will of the people should be the law of the land. Today, Legislative Republicans refused to give the people
of Wisconsin a pathway to repealing the archaic 1849 abortion ban and effect direct change through ballot
referenda.

“Providing Wisconsinites the ability to cast a vote to support their mothers, daughters, friends, and neighbors
through a referenda on ballots this fall would have allowed voters a direct avenue to make their voices heard.
Today’s lack of action by Republicans is just further confirmation they have never wanted the people of
Wisconsin to have a say in their reproductive rights.

“While a referenda regarding reproductive rights will not be on the ballot this fall, the ability to elect
representatives that listen to the will of the people will be. Make sure your voice is heard this November and
make an early plan to vote.”

We all have a responsibly to preserve the reproductive freedom of Wisconsinites for generations to come
