MADISON – Today, Representative Greta Neubauer (D-Racine) announced her appointment of Judge Maryann Sumi to the Wisconsin Ethics Commission. Judge Sumi fills a vacancy after former Commissioner Awais Khaleel resigned from the position.

Representative Neubauer released the following statement regarding Judge Sumi’s appointment:

“Judge Maryann Sumi is a deeply thoughtful leader and well-respected legal mind. Fair and impartial even under immense pressure, Judge Sumi has demonstrated her commitment to upholding the law and to the people of Wisconsin throughout her time on the bench. During this time of heightened partisanship, it is imperative that our leaders hold high standards when it comes to ethics questions in Wisconsin. Judge Sumi’s career speaks for itself — she will be a great addition to the Ethics Commission.”

Judge Maryann Sumi grew up in Racine, Wisconsin and spent years in public service as an assistant attorney general under attorneys general of both parties and as executive assistant in the Department of Natural Resources. Judge Sumi was first appointed by Governor Tommy Thompson in 1998 and was reelected in 1999, 2005, and 2011, serving for a total of 16 years. Since leaving the Dane County Circuit Court, she has been serving as a reserve judge.
