MADISON – Following the release of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data showing Wisconsin’s unemployment rate declined to yet another historic low of 2.8% in December 2021, Assembly Democratic Leader Greta Neubauer (D-Racine) released the following statement:
“This is fantastic news for our state’s economy and working families, and it demonstrates the resilience of our workforce. Thanks to Governor Evers’ new workforce initiatives and investments in the state budget, including last summer’s $130 million investment in the Workforce Innovation Grant Program, Worker Advancement Initiative, and Worker Connection program, Wisconsin is seeing record-low unemployment rates.”
This new data, released yesterday by the Department of Workforce Development and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, shows Wisconsin’s remarkable progress as we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. In December 2021, Wisconsin’s unemployment rate shrunk to a record-low of 2.8%, with the total number of Wisconsinites who are counted as unemployed at its lowest point in state history.
“Despite the historically low unemployment rate, Assembly Republicans continue to propose drastic and unnecessary changes to Wisconsin’s unemployment and workforce programs that would make it harder for those struggling to get the assistance they need. It’s clear that Republicans would rather waste time on unnecessary, politically-driven legislation than move forward proposals that would actually bring more people into our workforce.
“We have the opportunity to deliver real solutions for working Wisconsinites and bring more people back into the workforce. It’s time for Republicans to get on board and move forward on affordable child care, paid family leave, and modernizing our unemployment system, so it is easier for Wisconsin’s working families to thrive, not harder.”
