MADISON, Wis. — Assembly Democratic Leader Greta Neubauer (D-Racine) released the following statement regarding the special session on reproductive rights:

“Today, we have the opportunity to protect access to abortion and reproductive healthcare in Wisconsin. Our movement for reproductive rights has been building for decades, and right now is our most important hour.

“Let’s be honest about the situation that brings us here: if the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down Roe v. Wade, it will be a brazen, political act carried out by a blatantly partisan court, corrupted by appointments from a disgraced former president. Should the court adopt the leaked draft as their final ruling, Wisconsin’s criminal abortion ban from 1849 will go into effect, criminalizing abortions without any exceptions for rape or incest.

“During today’s special session, my Republican colleagues have the opportunity to join us, Governor Evers, and the people of Wisconsin in protecting choice in Wisconsin. They can join us in acting on the will of the people, or they can continue to sit on their hands and let crisis after crisis hurt individuals, families, and communities in our state.

“As Assembly Democrats, we will continue to fight for access to abortion and the protection of choice, no matter what.”
