Pewaukee – Today State Representative Adam Neylon (R-Pewaukee) issued the following statement in support of the Assembly passing Assembly Joint Resolution 107, legislation to amend the Constitution to provide courts more flexibility as they consider offering bail:
“Wisconsin’s bail system is broken. Too many violent, repeat offenders are given low cash bail because courts can only consider if the defendant is likely to show up to their court date. The Waukesha Christmas Parade attack, and many other incidents, could have been prevented by permitting courts the ability to consider a defendant’s prior criminal convictions when determining if bail is appropriate.
“Courts are charged with determining if a defendant is guilty so they can protect the public from future harm, but courts cannot fully do that important job if they are not allowed to consider a defendant’s previous violent crimes when considering bail.”
