Governor Evers called the Legislature into a special session to take up legislation to repeal Wisconsin’s archaic criminal abortion ban from 1849. Republicans gaveled in and out of this special session today, with no debate on the issue.

Representative Tod Ohnstad (D-Kenosha) had the following statement:

“If Roe is overturned from the United States Supreme Court, almost all abortions would be criminalized with no exceptions for rape or incest in Wisconsin because of this archaic law. This is surely frightening – we cannot afford to turn the clock back to 1849. ”

“I fully supported this special session and had hoped for at least some debate; however, Republicans continue to play politics with extremists. No politician should be deciding what a woman can and cannot do with her body. Women should not have to face barriers imposed by the government when they are already facing an incredibly difficult and heart-wrenching decision.

“I will continue fighting against the life-threatening bans on women’s reproductive health.”
