GREEN BAY, WI – Today, Rep. Shelton (D-Green Bay) joined Governor Tony Evers and State Superintendent Jill Underly at Edison Middle School to discuss and celebrate the K-12 budget investments for the 2023-2025 biennium. On the announcement and visit, Rep. Shelton shared this statement:

“Great thanks to Governor Evers and Superintendent Underly for doing what’s right for our kids! Increasing investments in our K-12 systems benefit us all, and give support to those in our schools who need it the most: the teachers returning to underserved classrooms, students learning to adjust to a new normal, and families and parents working to support the ‘whole child.’ Our kids and teachers deserve fully funded classrooms set up for them to thrive, not just get by.”

“The Governor’s budget plan will not only restore truly needed funds to the classroom – to the tune of over $2 billion dollars throughout the biennium – it will do so without raising property taxes for Wisconsinites. Our state’s GOP has left almost $5 billion in taxpayer dollars in the bank, untouched – the Governor and State Superintendent are putting this money back into our communities where it truly goes the farthest: with our kids.”

“I was especially excited to see the Governor’s commitment to school nutrition over the next biennium. The families of kids who fall into ‘reduced’ price meal categories may not truly have the means to get by, and helping to ease their burdens by providing free school meals can mean that those funds are used to support the family elsewhere. This is absolutely a step in the right direction to free school meals for all, and I’m proud to see this investment!”
