MADISON, WI — On September 21st, 2022, Gov. Tony Evers signed Executive Order #175, calling a special session of the Wisconsin State Legislature to create a pathway for Wisconsin voters to repeal the 1849-era criminal abortion ban. On this order, Rep. Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:

“Today, Governor Evers stood up for Wisconsinites by creating a pathway to protect reproductive rights. Since the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Wisconsinites have faced the uncertain reality of a post-Roe healthcare system. According to a recent Marquette Law School Poll, more than 60 percent of Wisconsin voters support safe and legal abortion access. The will of the people must be the law of the land. Wisconsinites deserve a process to reject the archaic criminal abortion ban that exists in our state.”

“Ignoring the voice of the people, Republican legislators have continuously shut down efforts to overturn the 1800s-era abortion ban. In witnessing Legislative Republicans’ constant and intentional inaction, we are witnessing injustice. Now is the time to stop ignoring the majority opinion, and allow Wisconsinites to decide on the restoration of reproductive rights.”

“The health of our communities cannot be brushed aside any longer. Wisconsinites deserve a process to reject the archaic criminal abortion ban in our state. As your Representative, I will always work to protect the reproductive rights of all Wisconsinites. I am proud to support this special session and I hope my colleagues on the other side of the aisle will finally come to the table. It is time to see the will of the people properly represented.”
