River Falls, WI…Representative Shannon Zimmerman (R-River Falls) received the William Steiger Human Services Award today from the Wisconsin Community Action Program Association.

Congressman Steiger was a Republican representing the Oshkosh area from 1967 – 1978. A Republican member of the legislature is recognized each session for their work advancing and advocating for policies that support Community Action and low-income families. Representative Zimmerman’s work focusing on the opioid crisis in Wisconsin earned him this recognition.

Drug addiction and the opioid crisis in particular has been a scourge on Wisconsin for years. The past few years have been especially bad as the state experienced a significant increase in overdose deaths associated with the rise of synthetic opioids like fentanyl and the onset of the coronavirus epidemic.

“Many know firsthand the damage drug addiction can do – you are not alone. I have personally witnessed the devastating impacts and gut-wrenching pain caused by addiction. Because of this, I am honored to continue the work started by my colleague Representative Nygren focusing on the Heroin, Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Agenda.”

Representative Zimmerman will continue working with stakeholders on these important issues. Consensus on meaningful administrative and policy changes will remain a goal of his as long as he serves in the legislature.
