MADISON – Today, Governor Tony Evers called a special session to address threats to abortion access. Representative Gordon Hintz (D-Oshkosh) released the following statement:

“Full access to safe and legal abortions is a crucial right that needs to be protected. Given the recently leaked draft opinion to overturn Roe v. Wade, the threat to safe and legal abortion care is the greatest it’s been in 45 years. Wisconsin’s 173 year-old existing state law criminalizes abortion and will have very real consequences for women and health care providers in our state. Our legislature needs to act now and provide assurances that women in our state will not be treated as second class citizens and that they will be able to continue to determine their own health care decisions if Roe is repealed.

“We cannot go backwards. Protecting reproductive rights is essential and I thank Governor Evers for calling a special session to address this urgent issue. I look forward to continuing my dedication to advancing policy that ensures access to quality, comprehensive healthcare for all.”
