Madison, WI – Today, President Shannon Holsey of the Stockbridge-Munsee Nation delivered the State of the Tribes Address. Sen. Mary Felzkowski (R-Tomahawk) was pleased to be in attendance and hear the President’s speech:

“It was a privilege to watch the Presentation of the Colors today, witness as honored veterans presented the flags of our eleven Tribal Nations and hear President Holsey speak on the trials, the struggles, the hopes and the dreams for the future of our tribal neighbors. There is one quote the President shared that stuck with me, ‘We are not given a good life or a bad life- we are given a life, and it is up to us to make it good or bad’.”

Since becoming the Senator for the 12th Senate District, I have had the opportunity to tour the tribal reservations within my district, and engage with tribal members working to improve their communities. I have been struck by how determined the tribal leaders are to create new opportunities for their people to move forward and improve their lives. I have a newfound, deep appreciation for the experiences of the tribal members and First Nations people within my district. I look forward to continuing our partnerships which will bring opportunity to all in the Northwoods and promote self-sufficiency for every individual, charged with their own success.”
