BELOIT, Wis. – State Senator-elect Mark Spreitzer (D-Beloit) released the following statement on President Joe Biden signing the bipartisan Respect for Marriage Act into law:

“This is a historic moment for our country. By codifying protections for same-sex marriages and interracial marriages into federal law, the Respect for Marriage Act ensures that marriage equality is the law of the land – regardless of sexual orientation or race.

“As a gay man married to the love of my life, it is difficult to convey how much this law means to my family, and to families like mine across the country. My husband Philip and I have been married for over three years, and our marriage has been the greatest blessing of my life.

“The Respect for Marriage Act recognizes that all successful marriages are based on the same principles of commitment and love. This important legislation will protect the marriages of millions of same-sex and interracial couples across Wisconsin and our country.

“I would like to thank each of the members of Congress who voted in support of this important bipartisan legislation. I would particularly like to thank Senator Tammy Baldwin for her extraordinary leadership and tenacity in ensuring this legislation would become the law of the land.”
