MADISON, Wis. — Today, State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski made stops at two women-owned small businesses in Madison to speak directly with local business owners about how they’re overcoming the continued challenges they face as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the need for greater capital investment in Wisconsin businesses. Both businesses are members of Main Street Alliance, which helped to coordinate these visits.
“Small businesses have faced serious challenges the past few years, but it’s great to see that local entrepreneurs are getting creative and coming back stronger than ever,” said State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski. “As a former small business owner, I know that the folks I met with today put their all into their businesses. I am grateful to Main Street Alliance for keeping these critical issues at the forefront and for showing us these great members. ” State Treasurer Godlewski first met with Marcia and Patrick, the owners of The Deliciouser. They discussed how they pivoted from successful restaurants on the isthmus to their new spice company, as well as their plans to expand their digital presence and offer cooking classes. The Deliciouser received a Main Street Bounceback Grant, which has helped them continue to expand. |
The next stop was with Peggy Furlan, owner of The Livingston Inn. Peggy shared some of the difficulties she has experienced being a woman business owner as she continues to maintain the 160-year-old Gothic revival-style Inn. Despite the decreased business that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic, Peggy and her dogs continue to welcome guests to their bed and breakfast. |
“The issues facing small businesses across our state are serious, that’s why I’m thankful for any opportunity to have our Main Street Alliance members come together and share their stories. Nearly half of all Wisconsinites work for a small business, and I know that Treasurer Godlewski will continue to be an ally in fighting for these business owners,” said Shawn Phetteplace, the Midwest Regional Manager of Main Street Alliance.
