WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Scott Fitzgerald (WI-05) issued the following statement after President Joe Biden delivered his State of the Union address.

“Tonight, President Biden showed the American people just how out of touch he is with the current state of our union. He failed to take responsibility for many of the crises facing our country under his leadership, including high gas prices, unenforced borders, empty grocery shelves, and global instability.

“The President framed Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine as a fight between democracy and autocracy, but this administration’s response to Putin has been soft at best. The President admitted this attack was foreseen but did nothing to deter Russia. Now his administration is scrambling to respond.

“Despite Republicans’ repeated calls to bolster U.S. energy independence, President Biden halted construction of the Keystone Pipeline and suffocated domestic oil and gas leasing. This has left the U.S. unable to meet the energy needs of our country and European allies, placing us all in a precarious position in trying to cripple Putin’s power. If the President is serious about protecting democracy abroad, he must immediately restart American energy production to cut off Putin’s lifeline.

“Talk is cheap, and it’s clear President Biden owes the American people meaningful action to put our country back on track.”
