WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following reports that China has locked down a third city — and nearly 20 million Chinese citizens — due to COVID-19 concerns ahead of 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) called for the U.S. and other countries participating in the Olympics to demand complete transparency from the Chinese Communist Party regarding COVID-19 cases in China. In a statement, Rep. Gallagher said:
“Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the Chinese Communist Party has not been truthful about the number of COVID-19 cases in China. That’s why I wrote to the U.S. Olympic Committee last year to ask how they plan to keep athletes safe in spite of the CCP’s unacceptable lack of transparency on this virus. As China locks down a third city just weeks before they are set to host the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, all countries need to be pressing for complete transparency about the spread of COVID-19 in China.”
Last August, Gallagher wrote to the President of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC), Sarah Hirschland, to express concerns regarding the CCP’s lack of transparency surrounding COVID-19 numbers and to ask questions about how the USOC plans to keep athletes safe.
