WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI), a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement on the President’s FY2023 budget, which makes an inflation-adjusted cut to defense spending.
“Russia is conducting an all-out assault on Ukraine, Iran is inching closer to developing a nuclear weapon, and the Chinese Communist Party is plotting against Taiwan. The world is growing more dangerous by the day, but you wouldn’t know that from looking at the President’s budget. The Biden administration has proposed a real cut to defense that claims to prioritize the Indo-Pacific while simultaneously calling for four fewer ships than we are buying this year, ignoring lessons from Ukraine by failing to arm Taiwan to the teeth, and ultimately leaving our men and uniform most vulnerable in the mid-2020s, which is increasingly looking like the window of maximum danger for the U.S. and our allies.
“The President says, ‘Show me your budget, and I’ll tell you what you value.’ It’s clear that the President still values the radical progressive wing of his party more than American hard power.”
