WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI), a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement calling on the Biden administration to increase sanctions on Iran and cease ongoing nuclear negotiations with the country in response to the Iranian regime’s violent crackdown against its own people and its leadership blaming the U.S. and its allies for international backlash.
“Across the world, there is growing outrage against the Iranian regime for its human rights violations, ‘morality policing,’ and illegal security practices. Despite this widespread condemnation, the Biden administration – which often touts its own human rights record – has continued to treat Iran as a partner in its efforts to negotiate a new nuclear deal and has entertained lifting sanctions on the country, which would give this murderous regime a critical lifeline and a blank check to harm its own citizens and the rest of the world.
“It’s not enough for the White House to just condemn this violence. They must follow their words with actions by ending their ongoing nuclear negotiations and imposing stronger sanctions against the regime for these egregious human rights abuses.”
