WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) released the following statement after Speaker Pelosi extended proxy voting through March 30, 2022.
“Even Democratic governors and left-wing media outlets are starting to admit it is time to drop the crazy mandates and get back to normal. Unfortunately, Speaker Pelosi did not get the memo. By deciding to extend proxy voting, she’s kept Congress in an obscure pandemic bubble that guarantees members of Congress don’t have to show up to work. It’s unnecessary, unscientific, and out of step with the rest of the country. This cannot become the new normal, and I’m confident that when Leader McCarthy becomes Speaker he will end Pelosi’s proxy power grab.”
Background:
Since the second session of the 117th Congress started, an average of 76 members a day have voted by proxy.
During this past short session week, 55 members failed to even show up to Washington for work. And since the beginning of 2022, 11 members have not voted in person.
