(Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Glenn Grothman (WI-06) released the following statement after U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) disclosed data revealing 178,308 migrants that illegally crossed the Southern border in the month of September now remain in the United States.

“Of the 227,547 illegal migrant encounters reported by CBP in September, 119,916 family units and single adults as well as approximately 8,392 unaccompanied children were released into the interior of the county,” said Grothman. “CBP also estimates there were 50,000 got-aways last month who illegally entered the country without detection of Border Patrol, adding up to a report that estimated 178,308 migrants remaining in the country.

“The Department of Homeland Security can try to hide the truth from the American public by releasing these record-breaking numbers late at night over the weekend, but the American people can see the border crisis is only reaching new heights.

“Since President Biden took control of the White House, there have been more than 3,800,000 encounters with illegal migrants at our Southern border, which represents the entire population of Milwaukee more than six times over. In addition, Border Patrol is estimating 600,000 got aways this fiscal year, up from their report of 365,200 in FY 2021 and 118,848 in FY 2020.

“Time after time, Border Patrol agents have emphasized their frustration to me with Secretary Mayorkas and President Biden who refuse to even attempt to put an end to this devastating, unprecedented humanitarian crisis. History has already been made on this Administration’s watch, when in July, Border Patrol reported more encounters with illegal migrants than in any previous fiscal year—with three months left to go.

“Leaving the door open for anyone in the world to enter our country unlawfully encourages drug smugglers and human traffickers to take advantage of our broken immigration protocols. The Biden Administration’s neglect has served as a gateway to heinous abuses against women and children at the hands of criminal drug cartels, who are generating billions in profits.

“Without necessary resources from Washington, Border Patrol faces the immense challenge to detect and confiscate deadly drugs during this nonstop rush of illegal immigrants. As a result of the President’s open-border agenda, fentanyl and other lethal substances are streaming into American communities, which tragically led to over 100,000 dying by overdose last year alone.

“President Biden must put the safety and security of America first by securing the border to stop the flow of illicit drugs into our country and safeguard migrants and border communities from the evils of the drug cartels. Instead, he has prioritized funding an additional 87,000 IRS agents to audit the middle-class rather than hiring thousands more CBP officers to enforce our laws and help save lives.”
