Washington, DC – This week, Rep. Ron Kind voted to codify essential rights for Americans by advancing the Respect for Marriage Act and the Right to Contraception Act.
“When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, it put the right to privacy on shaky ground and called into question past rulings affecting marriage equality and access to contraception,” said Rep. Ron Kind. “That’s why this week, I voted to protect these essential freedoms and advance both the Respect for Marriage Act and the Right to Contraception Act. Every Wisconsinite should be able to make personal decisions about their bodies, lives, and futures without interference from politicians.”
The Respect for Marriage Act would:
- Codify the settled legal precedents of Obergefell v. Hodges and Loving v. Virginia to ensure marriage equality for same-sex and interracial couples is codified under federal law.
- Provide legal protections to ensure those acting under state law are unable to discriminate against an out-of-state marriage based on the sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin of the individuals in the marriage.
The Right to Contraception Act would:
- Create a statutory right for people to obtain contraceptives and engage in contraception.
- Establish a corresponding right for health care providers to provide contraceptives and information related to contraception.
