WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Bryan Steil (WI-01) led a letter with members from the Wisconsin Congressional Delegation to Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg regarding Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) updated guidance, and the new plans for prioritization of funding under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

“The last thing our infrastructure systems need is a top-down, one-size-fits-all approach dictated from Washington that doesn’t meet the needs of communities. The FHWA memo raises serious concerns about how state local transportation agencies will be able to make decisions that best suit them. As I’ve said before, the $1.2 trillion bill was another massive spending proposal that will not be targeted towards the core infrastructure needs of our country,” said Rep. Bryan Steil.

Background:

On December 16, 2021, the U.S. Department of Transportation released a memo from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for the prioritization of funding under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The memo raises concerns for Republicans about state and local governments’ ability to delegate funding for infrastructure projects, tying the hands of local governments in making decisions on what projects will receive funding.

The letter is signed by Reps. Glenn Grothman, Mike Gallagher, Scott Fitzgerald, and Thomas Tiffany.
