WASHINGTON – On Monday, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, joined U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-La.) and 29 of their Republican colleagues in a resolution calling on the Biden administration to work with Congress to develop a plan to combat the rise in crime and crisis at the southern border. The resolution comes as the nation honors National Police Week.

Wisconsin communities have faced a drastic rise in crime as a result of Democrat policies. In August 2020, Kenosha erupted in violent riots that resulted in $50 million in damage following the shooting of Jacob Blake. In December 2021, Waukesha faced an unimaginable tragedy when six innocent bystanders were killed and 62 more were injured during the Waukesha Christmas Parade. Recently, a pro-life office was destroyed during a politically motivated attack in Madison. As families and communities across the state and nation fear for their safety, Sen. Johnson and his colleagues call on the Biden administration to work with Congress to develop and execute a strategy to solve the crime crisis.

“Rising crime, especially violent crime, in the United States poses a threat to the national interest, as well as to the safety and security of individuals, communities, businesses, law enforcement officers, and the rule of law,” the resolution reads in part.

“Violent crimes are occurring every day in major cities across the United States in part due to progressive prosecutors declining to charge violent offenders and certain bail reform policies allowing dangerous criminals back into society,” the resolution continues.

In March, Sen. Johnson introduced the Pretrial Release Reporting Act to inform Americans on the frequency of violent offenders that are being released into their communities on bail or other pretrial release condition. The bill requires the Department of Justice to issue a report to Congress detailing information on individuals released on bail and pretrial release that are charged with violent felony offenses, and how state courts assess bail when releasing individuals charged with violent felony offenses.

Sens. Johnson and Bill Cassidy are joined on the resolution by Senators Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Steve Daines (R-Mont.), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), John Kennedy (R-La.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Rick Scott (R-Fla.), Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), and Todd Young (R-Ind.).
