MADISON, Wis. – 22-year-old Monticello native Veronica Blumer grew up at UW Health, so it seems fitting that the once patient now works for the health system that saved her life.
Born two months early weighing just two pounds 11 ounces, Blumer had a brain bleed, causing Hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain causing extra pressure), and needed multiple surgeries at UW Health to correct the problem. The excess pressure caused problems in multiple body systems, including her eyes, which led to double vision when she was still a kid. With countless office visits, follow up appointments and surgeries to correct her vision, she became a familiar face around the UW Health Kids pediatric ophthalmology department. Since her last surgery in 2015, her vision is near perfect and when she graduated from college, she got a job at the place where it all started.
Blumer is a medical scheduler for the department of ophthalmology, and she works at a clinic with several of the doctors who helped her as a patient. In her role, she is often the first point of contact with ophthalmology patients, both in person and over the phone.
“I know what it is like to be an eye patient, so I understand if patients have questions or are stressed and anxious over unsolved medical issues,” said Blumer. “This job really means a lot to me so I want to pay it forward and thank all the UW Health doctors for getting me to this point because I wouldn’t be here at all without them.”
Blumer sees her role as a medical scheduler as a fulfilling career and a vital component to patient experience at UW Health.
