MADISON – Founder of FiveThirtyEight Nate Silver will visit UW–Madison as the La Follette School’s 2022 Public Affairs Journalist in Residence. Days ahead of Wisconsin midterm elections with the potential to remake the national political landscape, this public talk on Wednesday, October 26 at 7 p.m. by the author of the New York Times bestseller The Signal and the Noise could not be better timed. Nate Silver will dig into the critical issues facing voters this November and explain what polling data says about public policy solutions to problems like poverty, climate change, and inflation. During his visit, he will also meet with faculty, students, and local journalists.
Silver’s unique approach to data-driven, probabilistic thinking allows him to analyze polling data in innovative ways. He first gained national attention during the 2008 presidential election when he correctly predicted the results of the presidential winner in 49 states. Through his data-driven news site FiveThirtyEight, in partnership with ABC News, Silver contributes to election coverage and explores topics including politics, sports, and science. Before his work in politics, Silver wrote a series of books analyzing baseball statistics. He has written for ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Slate, New York Sun, and the New York Times.
