(Milwaukee, WISC.) – On June 30, 2022, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Biden Administration in Biden v. Texas, giving the Biden administration the ability to move forward with ending the dehumanizing, draconian, Trump-era “Remain in Mexico” immigration policy (also known as Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP). The Court ruled the Biden administration’s attempt to end that policy was lawful and struck down the lower court judge’s flawed opinion that expulsion or incarceration of asylum seekers is mandatory under U.S. immigration law.
In response to the ruling, Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera Action said:
“Remain in Mexico goes against our laws and our values and is cruel, barbaric, and shameful. For over three years, this program illegally denied constitutionally protected due process to migrants; forced them to live in inadequate and dangerous conditions for extended periods; and made them vulnerable to exploitation, kidnapping, sexual violence, and other horrific abuses.
The SOCTUS decision is a reminder of the need to repeal similar Trump-era policies like Title 42 that are still in place, and expose immigrants seeking asylum to continued violence by cartels, family separation, and in the most extreme case, death, as occurred with the recent case of the tragic death of at least 51 migrants in San Antonio.
Our country has a responsibility to both live up to our ideals as a nation that welcomes immigrants and assume responsibility for the legacy of US foreign policy that has contributed to forced migration from Latin America, Africa and Asia.
We call on Democrats in office or running for office to condemn all deadly and racist anti-asylum policies, including Title 42, and advocate for reestablishing a path that ensures all people are humanely welcomed at our borders, safely and with dignity. We must close a dark chapter of the Trump era and re-establish our compliance with international and national human rights laws.”
