(Waukesha, WI) – The Waukesha County Department of Parks and Land Use is happy to announce that three more communities will join the Adopt-A-Drain program to celebrate World Water Day, March 22, 2022. The additions of the Villages of Mukwonago, Pewaukee and Sussex will bring the total to six communities keeping local storm drains clean.
“Drain adopters are making a big difference for our neighborhoods,” said County Executive Paul Farrow.
“Clean storm drains help improve water quality, prevent future flooding, and save taxpayers money.”
The debris that collects in drains, such as trash, leaves, soil, grass clippings, and fertilizer, wash into the drain and become pollution in our lakes and streams. These pollutants can kill fish, close beaches, and increase weed and algae growth.
“We are excited to be improving our local waterways by joining this program on World Water Day,” said Village of Mukwonago President Fred Winchowky. “Volunteers will make a positive impact on our freshwater resources with every drain cleaning.”
Adopters are asked to clean the surface of their storm drain twice a month and report the quantity and composition of any debris they remove. All participants will be provided a brief online training to learn how to remain safe while clearing their drain and they will also receive a safety vest and storm drain marker medallion.
“This is an easy and impactful way for individuals looking to give back to their community,” said Village of Pewaukee President Jeff Knutson. “It’s also a great program for helping the environment!”
“We value having clean water for our residents and visitors,” said Village of Sussex President Anthony LeDonne, “so we’re pleased to have the Adopt-A-Drain program to add to ways to keep our lakes and rivers healthy.”
