Wauwatosa, WI – The Wauwatosa School District proudly announces that three District educators – Mr. Michael Hayden (Wauwatosa East High School, Longfellow Middle School), Mrs. Lauren Roznowski Hayden (Longfellow Middle School) and
Ms. Katie Pettit (McKinley Elementary School) – have recently received National Board Certifications. Recognized as the gold standard in teacher certification, the National Board believes higher standards for teachers means better learning for students.

Established in 1987, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is an independent, nonprofit organization that was established as the profession’s vehicle for defining and recognizing accomplished teaching for all students. It’s mission is to advance the quality of teaching and learning by maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do; providing a national voluntary system certifying teachers who meet these standards; and advocating related education reform to integrate National Board Certification in American education and to capitalize on the expertise of National Board Certified Teachers. National Board Standards are created by teachers, for teachers, as is National Board Certification, a voluntary process to certify teachers against those standards.

“I am incredibly proud of Mr. Hayden, Mrs. Roznowski Hayden and Ms. Pettit for their proactivity and dedication to achieving this prestigious certification,” stated Dr. Demond Means, Wauwatosa School District superintendent. “Receiving National Board Certification is indicative of the high-quality education they deliver to students every day, as well as their commitment to the profession of education. Our students will continue to benefit from their expertise.”

Mr. Michael Hayden and Mrs. Lauren Roznowski Hayden both maintained National Board Certification in Early Adolescence to Young Adult Music Education. To maintain certification, they recorded their classes, analyzed the teaching and professional growth via extensive writings, and reflected on their goals for the future. Mr. Hayden was originally certified five years ago, and Mrs. Roznowski Hayden received her certification ten years ago. Their new certifications will be valid for the next five years. Mr. Hayden teaches orchestra at both Wauwatosa East High School and Longfellow Middle School, and Mrs. Roznowski Hayden serves as an orchestra teacher at Longfellow.

Mrs. Katie Pettit, Senior Kindergarten teacher at McKinley Elementary School, also received her National Board Certification. To achieve this, Mrs. Pettit demonstrated to the Board her understanding of four key components:

  • Content Knowledge
  • Differentiation in Instruction
  • Teaching Practice and Learning Environment
  • Effective and Reflective Practitioner

Upon receiving National Board Certification, Wauwatosa School District educators receive a $3,000 one-time bonus, in accordance with the District’s updated teacher compensation model, which was approved by the Board earlier in 2022.
