Fond du Lac, WI. – The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Winnebago Cheese Company in Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac County, on the State Register of Historic Places.

The Winnebago Cheese Company has been added to the State Register for its association with Fond du Lac’s cheese industry, which played a significant role within the local economy for much of the twentieth century. The Winnebago Cheese Company is the most intact example of the few remaining buildings connected to the cheese industry in Fond du Lac.

The oldest part of the former cheese distribution facility dates to 1914. It was expanded in five phases between 1920 and 1955. The Winnebago Cheese Company’s utilitarian appearance is typical of early twentieth-century industrial buildings with its many arched window openings. Ornamentation is limited to brick parapets that top the primary Division Street façade.

The State Register is Wisconsin’s official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin’s heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
