MADISON, Wis. — Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler and Vice Chair Felesia Martin released the following statements in observation of Juneteenth.

Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler:

“On Juneteenth, we celebrate the emancipation of enslaved Americans and recognize the unfinished work of justice and equality in America. Every day Black Wisconsinites face barriers fueled by systemic inequities and broken systems – today, and every day, we must remain committed to breaking down those barriers and continuing the fight for equality and liberation for all.”

Democratic Party of Wisconsin Vice Chair Felesia Martin:

“Today we honor the strength, resilience, and fortitude of Black Wisconsinites across our state. We’re proud that Milwaukee is home to one of the longest-running Juneteenth celebrations in the country, with a celebration that began in 1971 with a small block party. With our celebration, we uplift Black voices, honor ancestry, and recommit ourselves to the continuing work of building a more just, more equitable Wisconsin.”
