MADISON, Wis. — The introduction of a nationwide abortion ban by Senate Republicans begs the question: where does Tim Michels stand?
Michels seems likely to support the bill given his extreme stance on abortion. He has called the 1849 abortion ban that doesn’t include exceptions for rape or incest is “an exact mirror” of his position. He also made it clear that he will not “soften” his stance on the issue.
There is also Michels’ foundation’s financial support of groups like Pro-Life Wisconsin and Wisconsin Right to Life that are lobbying to keep the1849 abortion ban in place and his family’s support of groups that target women who are seeking abortions using their cell phone location data.
Michels stance is far more extreme than that of the majority of Wisconsinites. The latest Marquette poll showed that not only do 65% of Wisconsinites believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases, but that 79% of Republicans also agree that abortion should be legal in cases of rape or incest.
“Does Tim Michels support a nationwide ban on abortion?” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Rapid Response Director Hannah Menchhoff. “His track record – both in what he says and where he directs his money – indicates that answer is most likely yes. Considering that most Wisconsinites believe abortions should be legal in cases of rape and incest, this bill would be too radical for our state.”
