On Saturday, July 30, Democratic Candidates for the 2022 Primary and General Election will speak to voters at a free brat barbeque and potluck in Ojibwa Park, in Sawyer County, Wisconsin, south east of Hayward (W7911 State Highway 70, Ojibwa, WI). Probable candidate speakers include all the U.S. Senate primary contenders including Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski, Alex Lasry, Tom Nelson, Steven Olikara, Peter Peckarsky, Kou Lee, and Darrell Williams.

According to Kim Butler, Chair of the WI 7th Congressional District Democratic Party, “The Heart of the 7th C.D.” was a successful event in 2018, attracting almost every statewide candidate, approximately 150 voters, and television news media from as far as the Twin Cities. The site was chosen because it is near the center of the vast 7th Congressional District, which includes all or part of 26 counties. Chair Butler noted, “Ojibwa Park’s old stone picnic shelter and quiet northwoods ambience made this one of the most fun and relaxed campaign events of the season. It’s a great way for voters in northern Wisconsin to hear and meet candidates in an up close and personal way and most voters in the district can make the drive in less than 2 hours.” The event will take place ahead of the August 9, 2022 Partisan Primary. Candidates are invited to set up and staff tables with yard signs and literature and visit with voters.

Festivities begin at 1pm with free bratwurst from Louie’s Finer Meats in Cumberland, and a potluck put on by the Sawyer County Lac Court Oreilles Democratic Party and the 7th CD Democratic Party. The public is encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs, bug spray, and beverages. Musical entertainment will precede the speakers, who will start at 1:30 pm.

Democratic 7th Congressional Candidate Dick Ausman will speak. Other invited candidates include Attorney General Josh Kaul, as well as Lt. Governor Candidates Sara Rodriguez and Peng Her. Secretary of State incumbent Doug La Follette hopes to attend and his challenger Alexia Sabor is a confirmed speaker. State Treasurer Candidates Gillian Battino, Aaron Richardson and Angelito Tenorio are confirmed to speak. Local State Senate and State Assembly Candidates may speak after the state and district candidates.
