MADISON, Wis. – In response to a Waukesha County judge siding with right-wing Republican activists and banning the use of drop boxes, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler issued the following statement:

“This ruling, on a suit brought by Republican operatives, is an attack on our freedom to vote. Absentee ballot drop boxes provide an easy, accessible, and safe way for voters to cast a ballot. Drop boxes are not new, but they became more widely used than ever in 2020 when Wisconsinites were voting during the coronavirus pandemic. They remain necessary as we face new COVID variants. This ruling also makes it a crime for a voter to give their ballot to a family member to return.

“By creating unnecessary barriers for Wisconsinites trying to cast a ballot—barriers that disproportionately harm people with disabilities and seniors—Republicans are continuing their shameless campaign to make voting less accessible and undermine Wisconsin’s elections so they can keep their stranglehold on power. Higher courts should speedily overrule this anti-democratic ruling, which disrupts the mechanics of our electoral system mere weeks before an Election Day for which more than 1800 municipal clerks have been carefully planning for months.”
