MADISON, Wis. – In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Tim Michels refused to say that he would follow the will of the people and certify the results of the 2024 election if he were governor.
Michels’ unwillingness to protect Wisconsinites’ right to vote is in line with his comments days earlier in which he did not condemn the violence of the January 6th insurrection saying “there was clearly a lot of people that showed up with the original intent of hearing what President Trump had to say,” adding only that there was “frustration over the election results.” He previously said “maybe” the 2020 presidential election was stolen and “President Trump probably would be president right now if we had election integrity.”
All four of the Republican gubernatorial candidates have embraced lies about the 2020 election. Kleefisch has called the 2020 election in Wisconsin “rigged” and refused to say whether she would have certified the 2020 presidential election had she been governor. Nicholson has continually cast doubt on the legitimacy of the 2020 election and voiced his desire to dismantle the WEC in order to put partisan politicians in charge of election administration. Tim Ramthun’s entire campaign is based around illegally decertifying the 2020 election
“Governor Evers is the only candidate running for governor who will protect Wisconsinites’ right to vote,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Rapid Response Director Hannah Menchhoff. “Tim Michels has moved farther to the right on election integrity in order to pander to Donald Trump and the ultra-MAGA wing of the party. No Republican running for governor can be counted on to defend your right to vote.”
