MADISON, Wis. – Twelve years ago, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed into law, which lowered health care costs for millions of families across the country and secured protections for the over 130 million Americans who live with pre-existing conditions. Building on this success, President Biden and Democrats passed the American Rescue Plan, which reduced health care costs for over 212,000 Wisconsinites (an 11% increase in coverage via ACA health insurance marketplace plans) and cut costs by an average of $800 for American families.
While Democrats remain laser-focused on lowering costs for Wisconsin’s working families, Republicans are pushing a devastating agenda that would raise taxes on 32% of Wisconsinites and cause insurance premiums to skyrocket. In fact, Senator Ron Johnson has argued that repealing the Affordable Care Act should be a cornerstone of the GOP’s agenda if they retake power.
If Johnson were to fulfill his self-serving agenda of repealing the ACA, it would gut protections for the 2.4 million Wisconsinites and more than 100 million Americans with pre-existing conditions. Americans with private insurance could see their premiums soar, and 21 million Americans could lose their insurance.
On the twelve year anniversary of the ACA being signed into law, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler released the following statement:
“Twelve years ago, despite massive Republican opposition, Democrats passed the Affordable Care Act and delivered a major win for Wisconsin’s working families – without the support of a single Wisconsin Republican. And now, over a decade later, Ron Johnson and the GOP are still running on an agenda that would hike taxes and strip away health care coverage from families across the state.”
