Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler released the following statement celebrating the passage of the historic Respect for Marriage Act in the U.S. Senate:

“Today, finally, Wisconsin celebrates a monumental step towards codification of marriage equality in the United States. Our great Senator Tammy Baldwin led the charge on this historic legislation and overcame a number of roadblocks along the way, including the lack of support from her Wisconsin colleague. The bill passed by the U.S. Senate today with significant bipartisan support will ensure that no matter the race, gender, sexual orientation, or identity of a couple, they will have equal protections under the law.

“The Respect for Marriage Act comes at a critical moment for our state and nation. Following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the Respect for Marriage Act will provide essential protections for same sex and interracial marriage before the U.S. Supreme Court can put their activism over established precedent. This bill also communicates a much-needed message of solidarity at a time when our communities are experiencing an increase in hateful white supremacist and anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric that is resulting in horrific violence nationwide.

“We owe it to our family, friends, neighbors to help get this bill over the finish line. Thank you to Senator Baldwin for your work on this historic legislation. Democrats in Wisconsin look forward to seeing this bill signed into law by President Biden.”
