MADISON, Wis. – Tim Michels avoided answering reporter questions on how he would implement gun safety legislation in Wisconsin for the second time on Monday, this time in an interview with CBS 58.
CBS 58 reports that Michels blamed rising gun violence on the Black Lives Matter movement and “did not directly respond to follow-up questions regarding his views on red flag laws.”
Red flag laws, which would allow law enforcement to temporarily remove guns from people who are a danger to themselves or others, are planned to be incentivized in the bipartisan gun safety package working through the Senate.
Also on Monday, while responding to questions from WKOW, Tim Michels failed to support the U.S. Senate’s bipartisan gun safety package, blamed gun violence on people who did not report mass shooters earlier, and refused to answer when asked if he supports expanded background checks saying “I don’t have that answer today.”
This is not the first time Tim Michels has dodged questions on gun safety. Following the tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, the Michels campaign refused to provide comment to the Cap Times, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, or the Associated Press about his plans to keep kids safe and prevent gun violence.
“Tim Michels has already established himself as an extreme candidate willing to pander to the ultra-MAGA wing of the Republican Party, so why is he so afraid to answer questions about guns?” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Rapid Response Director Hannah Menchhoff. “Michels is dodging questions because he knows his views on guns are too radical for Wisconsinites and are out of step with a majority of Wisconsin voters.”
