MADISON, Wis. – In audio obtained by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Tim Michels agrees that “abortion pills that are being passed off as contraception” will be “illegal in Wisconsin” if he becomes governor.
In the audio, an attendee of the event asks Michels, “I’m concerned about babies’ lives being lost to these abortion pills that are being passed off as contraception … What are your plans for dealing with that?”
Michels first outlined his support for the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, which put back into effect an 1849 law that outlaws most abortions.
“I believe that God is unhappy with a country that allows for the killing of babies. And I’ll tell you what, I think there’s two victims of an abortion. There’s the baby whose life was just taken away, and the mother, or the would-have-been mother, who’s going to carry that emotional baggage with her the rest of her life,” Michels said. “I’m pro-life because of my faith, and I will not apologize for it.”
After the attendee then returns the conversation to the pills, Michels says “they’ll be illegal in Wisconsin.”
The attendee is referring to emergency contraception such as Plan B, which Michels agrees should be banned in the state.
In the past, Tim Michels has touted his support from Pro-Life Wisconsin, saying he had “received a 100% rating” from the group. Pro-Life Wisconsin, who endorsed in the 2022 race before Michels entered, is opposed to all forms of “artificial contraception,” including birth control and Plan B.
Michels has advocated for extremely restrictive policies on abortion access. He continues to stand by Wisconsin’s 1849 law, which contains no exceptions for rape or incest, and only a narrow and confusing exception for the life a mother that is already restricting access to lifesaving cancer treatments.
“Tim Michels is as extreme as a candidate can be on abortion,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Rapid Response Director Hannah Menchhoff. “We should believe him when he says he will use the governor’s office to take away the rights of those needing abortion care or seeking reproductive health care services, with no understanding of the consquences.”
