MADISON, Wis. – Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler released the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s use of the shadow docket to reverse a Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling adopting legislative maps submitted by Gov. Evers:

“Today’s decision is unprecedented, and another clear demonstration that when Republican politicians don’t get absolutely everything they want from the conservative majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, they can simply turn to the next panel of far-right judges and try again. With a single, unsigned and sparsely reasoned opinion on its shadow docket, this Court is signaling a deep and alarming hostility to the legal protections that Americans have relied on for decades to ensure the equal representation guaranteed under law. It is difficult to believe this is how the framers of our Constitution envisioned our democracy functioning.

“Still, there remains a path towards resolving the issues raised by this decision and accepting the legislative maps submitted by Gov. Evers and adopted by the Wisconsin Supreme Court. The maps at issue are a vast improvement over the gerrymandered Republican maps we’ve lived with for a decade, and move us towards the fairer maps Wisconsinites across the state have been demanding. We always understood this would be a tough process, and today’s ruling is by no means the end of our fight for fair maps.”
