MADISON, Wis. – Today, every Wisconsin Republican in Congress voted against the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would restore Roe v. Wade as law, and the Ensuring Access to Abortion Act, which would protect a person who travels to another state to get an abortion.
“After a decades-long war on Wisconsinites’ reproductive health and freedoms, Wisconsin Republicans in Congress continued their attacks on abortion care by voting against this critical legislation,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Rapid Response Director Julia Hamelburg. “The stakes in November could not be higher: While Democrats in Congress, Governor Evers, and Attorney General Kaul are tireless in the fight to protect Wisconsinites’ rights and freedoms, Republican politicians want states to be able to strip people of their ability to make their own health care decisions.”
Today’s vote comes after Republicans in Congress have increasingly called to pass a national abortion ban if they win a majority, which House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy said he would support. And, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said it is “possible” the Senate could take up national abortion ban legislation. Meanwhile in Wisconsin, every Republican candidate for governor has fully embraced Wisconsin’s pre-Civil War era abortion ban – which makes no exceptions for victims of rape or incest – and Republicans across the state are aiming to go even further in restricting access to critical reproductive health care.
