MADISON, Wis. – Yesterday, thanks to support from every Wisconsin Democrat in Congress, the U.S. House passed the Lower Food & Fuel Costs Act to help lower food and gas prices. Nearly 200 House Republicans, including every Wisconsin Republican in Congress, voted against the bill – once again putting partisan politics over solutions to help lower costs.

“While Democratic Representatives Kind, Moore, and Pocan are laser-focused on lowering costs for Wisconsin’s working families, this vote proves that the Wisconsin GOP values their extreme, ultra-MAGA agenda over the families they’re supposed to represent. While Democrats are working to help lower prices at the pump and grocery store, Wisconsin Republicans continue to exploit Wisconsin families’ struggles and then actively block solutions,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Rapid Response Director Julia Hamelburg.

Specifically, the Lower Food & Fuel Costs Act would lower costs by:

  • Increasing competition in the meat and poultry industries to prevent artificially high pricing
  • Making E15 fuel available year-round and encouraging production of biofuels
  • Making fertilizer more accessible to farmers to help lower produce costs
  • Creating a supply chain task force

This “No” vote follows a pattern of Wisconsin Republicans in Congress voting against cost-saving legislation for working families across the state. In the past few months, Wisconsin Republicans have voted against bills to prevent gas price gouging, address the infant formula shortage, cap the cost of insulin at $35 a month, and more. Additionally, every congressional Republican voted against the American Rescue Plan, which has saved Wisconsinites money on everything from their health care premiums to rent or mortgage to child care costs, and more.
