Founding Father and first chief justice of the United States John Jay once observed that “Americans are the first people whom Heaven has favored with an opportunity of deliberating upon and choosing the forms of government under which they should live.” It is an opportunity that hyper-partisan Republican officials would like to see denied to some of us.

In an email to fellow Republicans, Wisconsin Election Commissioner Robert Spindell bragged about lower voter turnout in African American and Hispanic areas of Milwaukee in last year’s election. Spindell gleefully attributed these lower turnout numbers to the GOP’s “well thought out multi-faceted plan.”

That any American would celebrate voter suppression is disgusting. When an official responsible for the administration of our elections expresses those views, it is grounds for immediate removal. Spindell was also one of 10 fraudulent Wisconsin Republican electors who tried to subvert the results of the 2020 presidential election in favor of Donald Trump.

The health of our American democracy rests on full participation by all our citizens. Anyone who thinks otherwise clearly slept through civics class. Robert Spindell needs to go.
