MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Pedro Colón announced his candidacy for Wisconsin Court of Appeals District 1. He aims to succeed Court of Appeals Judge Timothy Dugan, who declared he would not be running for re-election.

“I am excited to announce my candidacy for the Wisconsin Court of Appeals,” said Judge Pedro Colón. “I have had the honor of serving this community for nearly 25 years as a legislator and a judge, and I am eager to take my experiences to the Wisconsin Court of Appeals. I have presided over a broad range of legal matters, ensuring that the law is applied impartially and fairly. With my understanding of the legal system and my commitment to equality and justice, I will  provide a valuable perspective to the court and help ensure that all Wisconsinites have equal access to justice.”

Judge Colón was appointed to the Milwaukee County Circuit Court in 2010 by Governor Jim Doyle and has since been re-elected three times, in 2011, 2017, and 2023. He is currently serving as the Presiding Judge of the Civil Division. Prior to his appointment to the bench, Judge Colón was the first Latino to be elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing Wisconsin’s 8th Assembly District from 1999 to 2010.

Judge Colón’s campaign announcement comes with substantial support from the judiciary, including Judge Joe Donald, the Presiding Judge of Court of Appeals District I, Court of Appeals District II Judge Lisa Neubauer, and over 20 other current and former judges from across Wisconsin.

“Judge Colón’s vast and diverse experience, combined with his proven track record, would make him an excellent addition to the Wisconsin Court of Appeals,” said Presiding Judge Joe Donald. “He has demonstrated fairness and impartiality in his judicial decisions, and I know that he will do the same on the District I bench. Having served alongside him on the Circuit Court, I am honored to endorse his candidacy and look forward to the opportunity to work with him once again on the Court of Appeals.”

“Judge Colón’s distinguished judicial record on the Milwaukee County Circuit Court has demonstrated time and again that he is a highly experienced and respected jurist whose dedication to the law and commitment to justice are unparalleled,” said Wisconsin Court of Appeals District II Judge Lisa Neubauer. “His extensive background, integrity, and impartiality make him an outstanding candidate for the Court of Appeals. I am proud to endorse Judge Colón’s candidacy.”

Judge Colón is an active member of the community and currently serves as a board member of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. He previously served as a board member of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage Commission and Milwaukee Area Technical College. Judge Colón attended Wisconsin Avenue Elementary School and is a graduate of St. Thomas More High School in Milwaukee, Marquette University, and the University of Wisconsin Law School, where he served as an assistant editor of the Wisconsin Law Review. Judge Colón lives in Milwaukee with his wife, Betty, and they have two adult daughters.
