MADISON, Wis. – Today the Wisconsin Supreme Court will hear arguments in the case against the state’s legislative maps, which are among the most gerrymandered in the country. For 12 years, legislative Republicans have drawn hyper-partisan, unfair maps, allowing them to serve their agenda rather and obstruct action on issues that matter to Wisconsinites like expanding the state’s BadgerCare program under the Affordable Care Act.

“This case could allow voters to choose their elected officials — rather than let politicians choose their voters — and make their voices heard on critical issues like Medicaid expansion. Seventy percent of Wisconsinites support expanding Medicaid, but under current state maps, lawmakers have refused to act on this lifesaving policy,” said Dr. Ann Helms, neurologist in Milwaukee and Wisconsin Lead for the Committee to Protect Health Care. “Now, Wisconsin is the only Midwestern state, and one of just ten states in the country, that hasn’t expanded Medicaid under the ACA. With expansion, almost 90,000 Wisconsinites would gain access to health care. That’s why doctors look forward to following this case and hope that it will help ensure elected officials respond to their constituents on health care issues.”
