The House Administration Committee, chaired by vulnerable Republican Bryan Steil, is employing a “former Trump campaign staffer reportedly involved in efforts to overturn the 2020 election,” who has been “subpoenaed by the DOJ,” according to recent reports. The staffer, Thomas Lane, has a “reported connection to the false elector scheme in Arizona came on Dec. 14, 2020, the same day 10 Republicans met in the Wisconsin State Capitol to sign false paperwork declaring themselves electors for Trump.” This comes as Steil’s committee seeks to investigate election practices.
In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Steil tried to downplay the hire, with a salary of $155,000, by “repeatedly” calling Lane a “junior staffer,” and suggesting “Lane’s reported involvement in the Arizona elector scheme might have occurred ‘before he was an attorney.’”
However, according to the House Committee on ethics“‘Senior staff’ refers to any employee paid at the senior staff level, which is $141,022 for calendar year 2023.”
DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“Bryan Steil is either lying about his role in agreeing to hire an election conspiracy theorist who attempted to throw out votes of millions of Americans or he doesn’t care about the dangers it poses. Either way, Steil embracing and empowering an election denier speaks for itself. Wisconsinites deserve better than extreme MAGA Republican Bryan Steil.”
