RACINE, Wis. February 17, 2023 – Today, the Friends of DeMatthew for Mayor campaign filed a sworn complaint with the Wisconsin Elections Commission against Racine Mayor Cory Mason for flagrant violations of campaign laws under Wis. Stat. § 12.03.

Jim DeMatthew, candidate for Racine mayor, release the following statement:

“Let me be clear: this complaint is not something I do lightly and is not an indictment of the city’s approach to helping as many people vote as possible. That is a noble cause, and one that I support.

Instead, this complaint is focused solely on the Racine Mayor Cory Mason’s blatant disregard for the rules and laws that govern our elections, and for believing said rules and laws do not apply to him or to his campaign.

Hosting and appearing at any kind of campaign event at a polling location, whether on Election Day or during the in-person absentee ballot window, flies in the face of both our principles of democracy and the trust the public places in our electoral process and leaders.

Voters should be allowed to cast their ballot without intimidation, and without being under the watchful eye of a candidate or campaign.

Now, more than ever, Racine needs a mayor who will bring the much-needed leadership, and pragmatic, common-sense values, to our city – not career politicians who have spent more than 10 years playing political games with our city.”
