WASHINGTON — In response to the Supreme Court’s stay of the decision by the Trump-appointed Judge Matthew Kacsmarykis to block access to mifepristone, one of the two medications typically used in medication abortion care, 18 members of the Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association released the following statement:
“Mifepristone, a medication that has been safely used for over two decades, will continue to remain available and approved for safe and effective use.
“Medication abortion is used to provide more than half of all abortion care nationwide, and if Trump-appointed Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk’s ruling was allowed to stand, its effects would have been sweeping and horrifying. Blocking the FDA’s approval of mifepristone across the country would have eliminated the most commonly used method of abortion care, even in states where access to abortion is codified into law.
“The fact is that anti-choice extremists want to ban abortion everywhere. They know they can’t win elections, and will continue to turn to the courts in their pursuit to impose their ideology onto every American. Today, they experienced a setback, but we must never waiver in the fight to safeguard and expand access to safe and legal abortion care.
“Democratic Lt. Governors have been leaders in our states in the fight to protect access to safe and legal abortion care, and we will continue to work tirelessly to protect bodily autonomy, and access to reproductive care.”
